Clock ticks towards Stockton Duathlon Festival 2017
Aspiring athletes, seasoned competitors and novices new to multisport events are being reminded that the race is on to sign up for this year's Stockton Duathlon Festival in time.
Last year saw over 850 participants run and cycle their way around Stockton's Riverside in a thrilling edition of the Duathlon Festival and residents and visitors are being encouraged to register for the fifth annual event.
The event takes places on Sunday 23 April but those interested in taking part are being encouraged to register for early bird entry by midnight on Sunday (26 March).
The popular run-ride-run format offers various types of races, suitable for all abilities, and gives people the opportunity to test themselves against other athletes or to simply feel the achievement of completing their chosen distance as a personal fitness goal.
Participants can choose from three race distances:
• Novice - 2k run, 10k cycle, 1krun
• Sprint - 5k run, 20k cycle, 2.5k run
• Standard - 10k run, 40k cycle, 5k run
Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: "We're seeing the Stockton Duathlon Festival go from strength to strength every year and it is a fantastic event to take part in, set against the beautiful backdrop of the River Tees. "Whether you're looking to really test yourself against the best or just looking for a new fitness achievement that takes you outside of the constraints of the gym - then this is the event for you.
"Even if you're not looking to take part, I'd encourage anyone who is interested in the Duathlon to come down to Stockton's Riverside and enjoy a wonderful day by the water and cheer all of the competitors on."
The 2017 Stockton Duathlon has also been awarded major event status in British Triathlon's Age-Group Major Events Calendar. The event also acts as a qualifier for the European (Standard Distance race) and World (Standard and Sprint Race) Duathlon Championships.
Cash prizes are on offer including £500 for first place, £300 for second place and £200 for third place in the Standard Distance race.
