'Achieving The Dream' - Exhilarating talk to explore pioneering mountaineering feats

11 April 2018

Preston Park Museum and Grounds is delighted to announce that it will be hosting a talk by the renowned mountaineer, adventurer and charitable fundraiser Chris Brown MBE.

'Achieving the Dream' will take place on Saturday 12 May at 7pm and chronicle Chris' climbing adventures as well as his long distance cycling and running fundraising efforts. Chris set up Claro Enterprises to provide employment and support for sufferers of mental health issues.

Chris is the tenth Briton to have successfully scaled the Seven Summits - the highest peaks on each continent.

The special talk on 12 May coincides with what would have been Joe Tasker's 70th birthday. Joe, who grew up in Billingham, infamously vanished with climbing partner Peter Boardman in 1982 while attempting to scale Mount Everest but left behind an inspirational legacy as a pioneering figure in UK climbing.

Joe's life and legacy are being celebrated in a unique exhibition, 'Savage Arena: The Legacy of Joe Tasker', which is on display at the museum until Sunday 27 June. The exhibition was created by the Mountain Heritage Trust, Ushaw College and Durham University and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and British Mountaineering Council.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Norma Wilburn, said: "Chris Brown has dedicated himself to supporting charitable enterprises and successfully completed challenges that few could even dream of undertaking. I'm sure that this will be a powerful and inspirational talk that will impact everyone that attends.

"I'm also thrilled that people will get the chance to visit the special exhibition marking Joe Tasker's life. He was brought up in Billingham, so it is a source of pride for the Borough to celebrate his legacy."

'Achieving the Dream' by Chris Brown MBE takes place on Saturday 12 May at 7pm, with tickets priced at £8. To book, visit the museum's welcome desk or call 01642 527375.

The 'Savage Arena: The Legacy of Joe Tasker' exhibition details Joe's early life in the North East through to his mountaineering exploits in the Alps and Himalayas. Running until Sunday 24 June, entry to the exhibition is free with museum admission.
