Sophie can't wait to preserve Globe's past
The history and heritage of the Globe will be enjoyed by people across Stockton-on-Tees and beyond thanks to the appointment of a Heritage Learning Officer.
Sophie Owens has taken up the new post, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will see her ensure that the Globe's fascinating past is not lost as its exciting new future as a live entertainment venue comes to fruition.
Sophie joins the restoration team having previously taught photography at Cleveland College of Art and Design and brings with her significant experience in art and design further education including photography, digital imaging and professional development.
She has also carried out various periods of charity work including a role as a clothing bank coordinator and charity shop manager.
Sophie said: "I am really looking forward to exploring the Globe's history and heritage while inspiring communities across Stockton-on-Tees and the wider Tees Valley to learn about heritage through their interest in the Globe.
"It will be great to have the opportunity to use the skills and knowledge I have developed through my previous roles to arrange exhibitions and support the experience of volunteers involved in the restoration project."
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Norma Wilburn, added: "This is a fantastic opportunity to really get to know the Globe's history and heritage, and make sure it is preserved for future generations.
"We are delighted to welcome Sophie and we have no doubt that her understanding of community outreach work and customer service combined with her passion for heritage and the arts will have a significant influence on the experiences of people who become involved with the Globe restoration through the numerous activities and projects she will coordinate."
Sophie will lead a range of heritage activities and events focused on the Globe and the history of entertainment across the Tees Valley thanks to a grant towards the Globe restoration from the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund's Heritage Enterprise Programme.
Among the thought provoking activities she will be responsible for are hard hat tours of the Globe, photography and oral history recording, a new heritage trail promoting Stockton as a music and dance town, exhibitions within the Globe as well as workshops, talks and much more.
