Stockton Council's Performance

How do the people of Stockton think we are performing?

In order to give the people of Stockton the service they need, the Council regularly consults with them through Viewpoint, the Residents' Panel for Stockton-on Tees, through Youth Viewpoint the panel for those under 18 and through larger surveys carried out by external companies on the Council's behalf.

A recent consultation exercise with residents, carried out by MORI concluded that:

  • 85% are satisfied with the area as a place to live
  • 47% are satisfied with the way Stockton Council is running the Borough
  • 60% are satisfied with the way Stockton Council provides services in the Borough
  • 21% think that the local economy will improve over the next couple of years. This compares with only 13% nationally (MORI ECONOMIC INDEX, June 2004)

How does the Government think the Council is performing?

The Government has various ways of inspecting the services the Council provides at Stockton.

Last year the Council was inspected under the Comprehensive Performance Assessment process(CPA). The CPA looks at all the Council's services and its core management functions and gives a score. The Audit Commission judged that Stockton Council is "improving well and demonstrating a 4 star overall performance". You can find out more about CPA by accessing the links on the left of this page.

The Government also requires the Council to measure its performance through a range of performance indicators covering its services. Performance against national and local indicators is reported in our Best Value Performance Plan (BVPP) which we produce as an Annex to the Council Plan. You will find our latest BVPP on the Best Value page which you can access from the link on the left of this page.

How will the Council continue to improve?

The Council is committed to continuously improving its services in a number of ways:

  • Quarterly Performance Monitoring reports progress on key priority areas and highlights 'areas of concern' which are then reported to Council Members
  • Comprehensive Performance Assessment improvement plan which has been integrated into the Council Plan
  • The Community Strategy
  • The Council Plan
  • Service Improvement Plans
  • Consultation exercises are constantly being carried out and the Council will act on the findings
