The Council is required to produce a Statement of Accounts on an annual basis, in compliance with the Accounts and Audit Regulations 2003 (updated 2006) and the timetable for completion for the 2007/08 financial year was 30th June (also prescribed under the Whole of Government Accounts (WGA) initiative developed by the HM Treasury). These regulations required Council's to provide a set period where the public can inspect the accounts and, in 2008, 4 weeks were set aside in June for this purpose. The statement was presented for approval by the Council's Audit Committee on the 26th June 2008.
The Audit Commisssion are the Council's external auditor and are responsible for auditing the accounts by the 30th September, in accordance with the above regulations. This process is now complete and the Audit Commission have issued an unqualified opinion of the Council's accounts.
