Faith and Belief Equality

Britain is a multi-faith society. At the time of the last census, in 2001, there were more than 100,000 followers of each of the six religions most commonly practised in England and Wales. More than eight out of every ten people said they held religious beliefs of one kind or another. Importantly, faith and belief equality also includes people with no religion or belief.
For much of its history, Britain's official religion has been Christianity. However, particularly over the last fifty years, the number of people in Britain practising other religions has greatly increase with more than 1.5million Muslims and 500,000 Hindus in Britain.
Many people think of "faith" as either a feeling or a collection of ideas representing one's convictions. Although both of these concepts involve elements of faith, the full definition is much broader. The Greek word most often translated faith,"pistis", means "firm persuasion" and "a conviction based upon hearing."
