Billingham House Demolition

The judicial review hearing for Billingham House has been adjourned until 17th August 2011. This has allowed time for the planning application for the demolition to be considered by Stockton Councils Planning Committee, following legal wrangling over the building.

Refurbishment for Bewley School

Bewley Infant School and Bewley Junior School will become Bewley Primary School this
coming September. The primary school will initially operate from both of the existing
buildings while a £2.9m extension and refurbishment scheme takes place on the existing
site of the Infant School.

The improvements will be finished by next summer so that all pupils can learn in one
building from September 2012. The existing Bewley Junior School building will then be
demolished and the land will be developed into outdoor learning and play area.

Billingham Forum

I am pleased to say that, after a two year refurbishment program, Billingham Forum has now re-opened its doors and appears to be a resounding success with residents.
Visitors to The Forum say that they are very impressed with the new and improved facilities.

Wallington Road Traffic Calming

Ron Simpson, a member of Billingham Independents and a resident of Wallington Road, has worked alongside other residents from the area and also the Community Engineer for Highways to draw up a scheme that would slow traffic down in Wallington Road, between Buttsfield and Longfellow.

Residents have complained about cars speeding along this road for many years now and it's often to take a short cut between Longfellow Road and Marsh House Avenue. The scheme has been put before members of the Councils Transport Strategy Committee for consideration but as yet has not been allocated the necessary funding.  Ron hopes that the scheme will be successful next time around.

Billingham Town Centre

Myself and Colin continue to encourage Stockland, the owners of the Town Centre, to provide toilet facilities for residents. Stockland have put a hold on the facilities that were going to be provided in the West Precinct until their talks progress with the prospective supermarket retailer who will occupy the area opposite Boyes.

Mayor & Deputy Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees

Colin Leckonby, my ward colleague, supported by his wife Marjorie, completed his term of office as Mayor of Stockton this year. Colin and Marjorie have spent the last 14 months attending 370 engagements and although tiring at times they have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have met a lot of lovely people.

Colin's Mayors charity fund raised approximately £18,000, of which £10,000 went to Corner House Youth Project in Stockton and, because of Colin's passion for cycling, £4,000 was donated to the Dave Rayner Cycling Fund which helps young cyclists who wish to take up cycling as a career. The remaining funds were shared among 15 local charities who received £250 each.

Colin and Marjorie would like to thank Susan, Kevin, Margaret & Linda from the Councils Democratic Services Department for all of their help throughout the year.

I was nominated as Deputy Mayor this year, for the period up until next April, and then will take over as the Mayor of Stockton for 2012-2013.  I was pleased to accept the honour and look forward to fulfilling my mayoral duties.
