Cllr Jim Beall recycling plastic at Redhill shops

Roseworth Ward News

Waste Matters
Following the success of the pilots, the kerbside collection of plastics and cardboard will be rolled out throughout the Borough over the next year. Most of Roseworth estate, Fern Park and Woodlands will be included in phase 1 commencing soon, with the rest of Roseworth, Little Ragworth and Sheraton Park coming on board in April 2009; Blakeston Court will be in phase 3 in October 2009.

The plastics container at Redhill shops will remain in place during this period and monitored for usage to see if it is still needed in the future.

Advice & Information stands to answer your queries are planned at numerous venues; locally, this will be at Redhill shops on the mornings of 8th Oct., 8th Nov. and 10th Dec. and Durham Rd Tesco on 18th Oct, 27th Nov and 13th Dec.

The green waste collection service has been extended this year to include the week ending 21st November because of the longer growing season that we are now experiencing. Collection will start again next April.

About a third of households in the Roseworth Ward have not yet completed their Electoral register update form. If you require any assistance (or another form), please ring the help line on 526196. Otherwise, expect a knock on your door from an official canvasser in the near future - but don't forget to ask to see their I.D.

Family Tree
Stockton Council's Registration Service have a new website which is designed to help people find a whole range of family records from the archives - www.stocktonroots.co.uk

Roadworks in Roseworth
Tesco shoppers will have noticed that works have started on Durham Rd near the store exit - with the purpose of widening it to two lanes to ease traffic flow. The existing pelican crossing will be upgraded to a full signal-controlled junction, and both carriageways will be resurfaced at night to minimise disruption. All being well, these works should all be completed by mid-November 2008.

Improvement to the Rochester Rd/Darlington Lane junction is now complete; we have secured some additional money for floral works as part of our promise to brighten all gateways to the Ward.

It's Rosebrook
That's the name popularly decided for our new primary school created by the coming together of Roseworth and Redbrook Schools. All the children, dressed in their new, smart, dark green uniforms are together in the former Roseworth School whilst work on the new building progresses well towards intended completion in March 2009. Head Teacher, Val Rudd, is pleased with the enthusiasm of all involved in making a good start to this new venture and particularly praised the support from the parents over uniform and attendance.

Stockton Council is still considering options for the use of the old Redbrook site. My fellow ward councillor and I have suggested that it would be a good base for services for the community.

Walk this Way
Councillor Inman and I have started a rolling programme of walkabouts in the Roseworth Ward in the company of Neighbourhood Police, Care For Your Area, Enforcement, Anti-Social Behaviour Team and, where appropriate,Tristar/Tees Valley Housing. The purpose is to identify any problems on site and decide who is best able to act to put things right. Residents are invited to join us or talk to us on route. The next ones are:

15th January in Sheraton Park, Darlington Lane & Fern Park, and

12th March 2009 in the Rosslare Rd area

All the walkabouts start at 10am (we have undertaken tea-time ones in the lighter nights).

If you are interested, please contact me for joining details nearer the time.

Roseworth Pub Site Update
I thought that I would to be in a position to announce some good news on this but, sadly, this is not the case. Since last December, my colleague and I have been continually pressing the owners to have the site flattened in advance of the eventual new build. The owners of the site were at the point of bowing to our persistent requests and actually received a quote for demolition but then they saw a market opportunity to sell on the site to Elder Monsen Ltd. So the work has started again with the new owners to try and secure the removal of this eyesore. Residents can be assured that we, and Council staff, will redouble our efforts to try and get this resolved.

Ward Surgery Dates and Times

Schools for generations to come
Most of you should have received information through your door explaining about the potential £150 million available for modernising our secondary school provision; some may have been involved in initial consultation events. It is clear that in a background of falling school rolls, the current provision in North Stockton cannot be maintained. Stockton Council's Cabinet have agreed to go out to formal consultation on proposals for our area that we have two schools. The Norton School and Blakeston School would be replaced by a single 11-16 Academy with 900 places in the Norton area; Bishopsgarth would be refurbished for 750 (plus the special unit for students with physical disability).

There will be lots of opportunities to express your views on the final proposals including local consultation sessions - details to be determined. It is important to try and get this right for future generations.

With all the talk of school "closures", it could be easy for the real good news about fantastic new school buildings for our children to get lost.

Also, it should be stressed that the proposed closures of both Blakeston and Norton Schools in no way should be seen as a negative reflection on them and the education they provide. Both work extremely hard and both add educational value to their pupils in excess of that achieved by schools in the so-called "leafy suburbs".

Walking the Dog
There are already a few dog waste bins in parts of Roseworth but more can be provided. So dog owners, give us your suggestions for where others should be located and we will try and arrange provision.

Strike a Light
Did you know there are over 750 lighting columns and lights in the Ward? Work will begin this year on a major programme to replace old ones. It will be phased but, money permitting, will eventually upgrade all throughout the Ward. Faults to existing lighting can be reported by telephone on 526769 or by sending an email to street.lighting@stockton.gov.uk or by submitting an online form via Online Services toward the top of this page. It helps if you include the number painted on the lighting column when you make a report in order to get an even quicker response.

Care For Your Area
Don't leave it up to someone else to report a problem. Its up to all of us to report a problem in relation to litter, street cleansing, graffiti, highway maintenance, trees and hedges, grass cutting, waste and recycling - so contact them on 391959 or email them at careforyourarea@stockton.gov.uk or via Online Services toward the top of this page. If the work doesn't get done, please contact Cllr Inman or me. Our details are on this page.

Roseworth neighbourhood police team now have some office space in the Tristar Homes building on Redhill Road in December 2007. The office is used as a base for officers and is not manned all the time. It is sometimes possible to meet members of the team there by prior appointment though. The Neighbourhood Police Team can still be contacted on 01642 302930 or catch them as they patrol the area to share any of your concerns with them on community policing matters. They are also present at our ward surgeries should your queries require their involvement. Stockton Council grants £250,000 to support community policing in the borough.

Roseworth in Bloom
As spring approaches, we are seeing an eye catching floral display from the bulbs around the area. We are open to suggestions for further bulb planting for future years. In the coming year, we intend to provide oak barrel planters to other entrances to the Ward as we did at the Redhill Road / Durham Road junction last year. This is funded from a small environmental works budget for local use. We could do more, quicker, if we could get sponsors for the oak barrels, which cost about £75 each to provide and around £112 per year to maintain. If you know of any business, group or individuals (including yourself) who would be willing to sponsor a barrel please put them in contact with us. In recognition of their support, we can arrange for a small plaque to be displayed on the barrels naming the donors.
