Laing, Terry
My background
I was born in Norton and educated at Norton High Street School (now Somerfield) and Richard Hind Secondary Technical School (now housing estate) which perhaps gives away my age a little.
I married Sue in 1969, we had two children, Andrew and Helen. Sadly, Helen died of meningitis in 2001 but during her short time with us she had and still does have a major influence on our lives.
I played soccer for Norton and cricket for Thornaby before taking up refereeing for 15 years. During this time I was an official with The Northern and Teesside Leagues and was privileged to have refereed two English Schoolboy Internationals. I also served as chairman for Stockton Referees Association and was well known in sporting circles within the borough
I worked as an accountant for Cummins, a large multi-national, for 35 years until taking early retirement in 2002. Still having an appetite for work, I took a part-time post in Air Products for four years until they closed their operations at Billingham in 2006.
With the unfortunate death of Stephen Smailes I was privileged and honoured to be able to take up the role of councillor for the Hartburn Ward in February 2006.
My role in the Council and the local community
My role in the Community
In previous years I have served as auditor, treasurer and a member of the management team of Stockton Victim Support.
Both our children attended Holy Trinity and Rosehill before continuing their education at Ian Ramsey. During this time I was actively connected to the schools and at one time chair of the Parent/Teachers association at Holy Trinity
I am currently treasurer of the Out of Schools club, operating for the children of parents attending Holy Trinity and Rosehill Schools and continue to support the local schools whenever possible.
Sue and I are both active members of the Holy Trinity church congregation.
We are also active supporters of Meningitis UK a registered charity committed to raising the awareness of meningitis and raising funds for medical research into the disease. For a number of years we gave up our holidays to take part in national walks in Ireland, Scotland and England to support this campaign. Each year, with the help of friends, we hold an annual walk in Osmotherly in Helen's memory, which has raised over £60,000 in the last 7 years.
My role as councillor
With my colleague, Ken Lupton we represent the Hartburn Ward.
We are very active in our ward, holding regular surgeries, issuing newsletters and supporting the local need in our quest to maintain the very high standards of community life in this part of the Borough.
I sit on various outside bodies and with Ken work very closely with our local partners, school, police, neighbourhood watch and residents association, to mention a few.
