Data and information downloads

Each theme is divided into sub sections which group the data and information into further subject areas. Users have the option to select an individual sub section that is of interest to them, or at the bottom of each theme page access all datasets which are available to download. A dataset is a collection of data about a key subject (a variable) and in the case of the Data Warehouse, different locations, usually presented in table format. Each theme page also contains a small selection of regularly updated 'interesting facts' about the theme in question.

Each dataset download is presented in the same way. An introduction page identifies the subject, the geographic levels the data relates to and links to the metadata page and each data page in the download. Metadata is loosely defined as the 'data about the data'. Generally speaking, it provides information about the definition, source, author and date of publication for the data in question.

Users are encouraged to read metadata pages before accessing and downloading datasets. Doing so will help ensure that users are familiar with the dates that the data relates to; the hyperlink to its original source and any notes provided to help support or explain the data further.

The copyright owner for each dataset provided as a download within the Stockton-on-Tees Data Warehouse is clearly identified in the metadata sheet for each individual download. Copyright is a set of exclusive rights, granted by the law of a jurisdiction to the author or creator of an original work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work.  The vast majority of the datasets provided are Crown Copyright protected. Crown copyright is a form of copyright used by Government which provides special copyright rules for the Crown. Please follow this link to find out more about the terms and conditions of use for copyright protected data.

Each download also includes information paragraphs which summarise the data provided. These help interpret the datasets and highlight key points (e.g. change over time, improvements and reductions) in relation to Stockton-on-Tees. Please feel free to use these as you would require.
