School admissions and exclusions appeal panel

  • Are you interested in local education?
  • Do you have tribunal experience or would you like to obtain such experience?
  • Do you have good communication, reasoning and decision-making skills?
  • Do you have a child at school in Stockton-on-Tees area?
  • Are you a Governor or teacher at a school?

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above questions we would like to hear from you as we are currently recruiting members for the independent admissions/exclusions appeal panel.

An independent Appeal Panel must be set up by the Local Authority to hear appeals against unsuccessful applications for admission to community schools and permanent exclusion from all schools in its area. In a partnering arrangement with the Diocesan Authorities the Panel also hears appeals against unsuccessful applications for admission to Church Schools in the borough.

Admission appeals represent the bulk of the work of the Panel (a significant number of admission appeals have been heard by the Panel this year). The Panel's decisions are very important for pupils, parents, schools and the Local Authority impacting on family life to school organisations.

The Panel is supported by administrators in the Council's Law and Democracy service and legally qualified clerks. Training, information and advice is available to all members to enable you to fulfil this role.

Unfortunately this is an unpaid position although expenses are payable.

If you are interested and would like to find out more, or would wish to apply to be a member, please contact April Pilgrim (contact details below).

Please note that local Councillors and employees of the Council (except teachers) cannot sit on the Appeals Panel.
