Stockton's Hall of Fame

Stockton's Hall of Fame is where we recognise the contribution made by those who come from, or have lived and worked in the Borough. We welcome your suggestions for additions to the Hall of Fame. 

 

Benjamin Flounders 1768 - 1846


Benjamin Flounders played a part in the Stockton and Darlington Railway and left after his death, substantial sums to provide for schools at Ackworth, Barnard Castle and Yarm.  

         

Brass Crosby 1725 - 1793


Stockton's own Dick Whittington, Brass Crosby, went to London to seek fame and fortune, championing the freedom of the press as Lord Mayor and Chief Magistrate.

               

Dr G C M McGonigle


Dr McGonigle was Medical Officer for Stockton in the 1930's. He carried out research into the effects of poverty on health. He published the paper 'An investigation into the effect of certain factors upon child health and weight' (1932) and a book 'Poverty & Public health' (1936).
                           

George Stephenson - 1781 - 1848


Railway pioneer George Stephenson was instrumental in the construction of the Stockton to Darlington railway.

         

Harold MacMillan - 1894 - 1986


Former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan accepted a peerage in 1984 and was created Earl of Stockton and Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden.
          
                    

Ivy Close 1890 - 1968


Winner of the Daily Mirror's 'Most Beautiful Woman in the World' competition in 1908 Ivy Close went on to be a film star at the beginning of the movie industry. She is linked to Stockton through birth.

       

Jimmy James


Jimmy James was a comedian born in South Bank, Middlesbrough with strong links to Stockton. His early life in the town influenced many of the comic characters he created. He is buried in Oxbridge.

  

John Walker - 1781 - 1859


John Walker's explosive experiments led to the invention of the friction match.
        
     

Lord Alexander Fleck - 1889  - 1968


Instrumental industrialist Lord Alexander Fleck played a key role in establishing ICI on Teesside.

        

Thomas Sheraton


Thomas Sheraton was one of the big three of English furniture designers

He is famous for producing a series of books on furniture design. The first was called ?The Cabinet makers and Upholsters drawing book?. This was first produced whilst he was living in Stockton. He then planned a 125 volume work ?Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and General Artist's Encyclopaedia? of which he produced 30 before his death.

        

Thomas Whitwell  1839 - 1878


Thomas Whitwell was an important industrialist working with other local counterparts to improve and develop processes in industry.  He patented a stove pipe system for blast furnaces.
      

Will Hay - 1888 - 1949


Will Hay's performing ambitions took him from Stockton-on-Tees to stages around the world.
