Stockton Council was awarded Four Stars and the top category Improving Strongly in the 2006 Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA), the highest award possible.
We are the first 'unitary' council outside the London or big-city metropolitan areas to do this 'double' and Stockton joins just ten single-tier or county authorities in England who have achieved such success.
Stockton is bursting with pride at winning Best City in the 2007 Britain in Bloom competition, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). This comes hot on the heels of us winning Best City category in the prestigious Northumbria in Bloom for the fourth year running. Stockton also picked up a special award - the Biodiversity Award in recognition of its recycling, countryside parks and nature trails. No less than four of our parks have been awarded Green Flag status.
A GMB survey in 2007 has also shown Stockton has cleanest streets in the Tees Valley and third cleanest in North East behind Castle Morpeth and Berwick.
Stockton is host to many fantastic events and festivals with SIRF - the Stockton International Riverside Festival 2006 winning the Journal Culture Award for the best event in Tees Valley and was also crowned Best Overall North East Event.
School pupils across Stockton Borough achieved their best ever results in their GCSEs in 2007 with a 96 per cent pass rate. Sixty per cent of pupils achieved an A* to C pass in their GCSEs - that's a five per cent increase on 2006.
