How to pay your Council Tax

There are various ways that you can pay your Council Tax bill to Stockton Council.   

Pay online

You can pay your Council Tax online with our secure online payment service.  Payment is quick, easy and safe.  We accept Switch or Visa debit and credit card.

 

Banking online

You can pay using online banking.

Please quote your Council Tax number and allow three working days for payments to be credited to your account.

Direct debit

You can pay your Council Tax bill by direct debit over 10 or 12 months.  We offer several payment date options so that you can arrange payment at a time to suit your budget.  Please indicate on the direct debit form which payment date is most suitable for you.

 

Bank standing order

Contact your bank and instruct them to pay instalments on your behalf. 

Please quote your Council Tax number and allow for five working days for payments to be credited to your account.

Telephone

We accept Council Tax payments via a 24-hour automated telephone service. Calls to this number are charged at a local rate.

By post

To pay your Council Tax bill by post,  please make  your cheque, money orders or postal order payable to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.  Please write your address and account number on the back of the cheque. 

If you would like a receipt posting back to you please enclose a stamped-addressed envelope along with your bill and payment.

Please allow seven days from posting for the payment to be credited to your Council Tax account.

In person

Visit one of our payment offices with your bill and payment.

 

At the Post Office

You can pay your Council Tax at your local Post Office.  Please contact us to request this.  We will send you a new Council Tax bill with a barcode to allow payment at a Post Office. 

  • Contact the Customer Services team on (01642) 397108 to arrange to pay Council Tax at a Post Office   

 

Problems paying your bill?

If you have difficulties making Council Tax payments, please contact us as soon as possible. We may be able to give you alternative payment arrangements and prevent further charges being made to your account. 

 

Missed payments  

To avoid receiving a reminder notice for late payment, your Council Tax instalments must be paid on the due dates shown on your bill. If you have a problem paying it is important that you contact us straight away on (01642) 397108.

If you do not pay, the Council may start recovery proceedings.
