See the changing face of the BoroughMonday, Jul 21 2008

PEOPLE can view Stockton High Street in the 1950s and early 1960s thanks to a new photography exhibition from a popular local photographer.

The exhibition, running until Monday, August 25 at Preston Hall Museum, features Jack Marriott's photographs of the Stockton area. Jack ran his own photography business in Stockton High Street and was a popular and well-respected photographer. He was commissioned to take thousands of pictures of local engineering workshops, shipyards and businesses in his time aswell as taking as well as many pictures of the old Stockton High Street.

Born in Sheffield, Jack grew up in Stockton and has had several famous engineering firms as his clients including Davey Ashmore Mckee and Smith's Dock. He gave his vast collection of photographs to Stockton Borough Council five years ago.

Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: "The Borough has gone through many changes over the years and this exhibition is a great way to see how things looked in previous years."

The Museum is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4.30pm and Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4.30pm with last admission at 4pm. The exhibition is free, however normal museum admission prices do apply.

Museum admission fees are £1.30 for adults and 60p for children. Concessions, family and group rates are available. For more information about this or any other Museum event telephone (01642) 527375.
