STOCKTON Council has been awarded the prestigious Beacon Status award for its work in Health and Social Care.

The national award for the 'Healthy Communities' theme means that Stockton will now share best practice with other authorities across the country over the next 12 months.

Stockton Council's vision is to play its role in supporting the Government's 'Tackling Health Inequalities' strategy by working in close partnership with other agencies including the Primary Care Trust, Area Boards, SureStart and Neighbourhood Management schemes and the local community.

Councillor Bob Gibson, Leader of Stockton Council, said: "This is testimony to Stockton as both leaders in Health and Social Care and its dedication to improving many areas related to the health of those living in the Stockton Borough."

Councillor Ann McCoy, Stockton Council's Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: "This is wonderful news and shows the progressive work being carried out in Stockton and we are pleased to be able to pass on our knowledge and best practice to other authorities nationally."
