Marjorie and I were greeted at the Stockton Sea Cadets' Headquarters in
Thornaby by two cadets and shown up to a reception room. We had time to
talk to the new committee members who had volunteered to take on these
duties, otherwise the unit was in danger of closing. The cadets formed up
in the drill hall (rather small) and we were escorted into it to watch the
inspection by the District Officer. The Sea Cadets were very smart and
showed what some young people do in their spare time and the dedication it
takes. While the inspection was taking place Marjorie and I were able to
talk to the young people, and their enthusiasm for the Sea Cadets came
through loud and clear. The Inspecting Officer gave them the good news that
they had passed the Inspection and received another pennant to be shown on
the wall. We all went outside in the cold to watch the cadets set up a rig.
This is a term used to pass men and equipment between ships etc. This was
done with only ropes and no mechanical fixings. We were very impressed with
their skills and would have been willing to be transferred if we had been
asked. We then went back into the building for a warm cup of coffee
before leaving for home.
