Marjorie and I arrived at Stockton Town Hall before all the school children
and teachers from Junction Primary School arrived. They had travelled to
Stockton Town Centre by the normal service bus, much to the amusement of
the driver, as it was much cheaper than booking a coach. The children
enjoyed the trip on the bus as it was quite an adventure. The children had
a cool drink before being taken up to the Council Chamber where I explained
about the history and meaning of the objects on the Mayoral chain.
Kevin, the Mayor's Attendant, then told them the history of Stockton
and the Town Hall, according to Kevin. Now a friendly ghost has
appeared in Kevin's history beside the alligator, so we wondered how many
children had nightmares when they went to bed that night. The children came
up with many questions for both myself and Kevin, and I think we managed to
answer them all to the satisfaction of the children.
We finished the tour of the Town Hall before going back to my reception
room for a cooling drink and some of the Mayor's biscuits. It was soon time
to say goodbye and the children were looking forward to another ride on a
service bus.
