As today is "No Smoking Day" this event was set up in one of the committee
rooms in Stockton Town hall before the council meeting. Several Stockton
Councillors attended the event and the ones that had given up smoking were
able to use a calculator to find out how much they had saved since stopping
smoking - which turned out to be rather large sums of money.
Several Councillors blew into an instrument that measured the carbon
monoxide in your breath which should read less than 6. We all measured
about 1 as it is the smokers that measure over 6. We took some of the
literature for our local community centres to get the message out to the
public about the help available for people wanting to stop smoking.
Stockton Borough Council Meeting
Marjorie stayed for this meeting after the "No Smoking" event as this was
the last full meeting of the Council in my Mayoral Year. Before the
meeting started it was a delight to welcome Councillor David Harrington
back to work following a serious car accident he had late last year. This
was also the last meeting that several Councillors will be attending as
they are not standing at the council elections in May this year.
The business was conducted in an ordered way with the main debate on two
motions put before the Council. After all the business was completed I
thanked all the Councillors for the their courteous behaviour shown to me
during my year as Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees. I also invited everyone to the
Mayor's reception room for some refreshments after my final council
meeting.
