Stockton divers with the Mayor | stockton divers2 | Stockton-Divers-presentatio.jpg |

After a morning of ward problems and computer problems (it just won't listen to me - if you see a computer on the roadside looking as though it has been thrown out - don't be nice to it!) I had an afternoon off with a friend having a good look at the new M & S store on Teesside Park. The only way some people can get there is if someone can give a lift, as there are no buses going. What a nice surprise when we found the Fair Trade message on the saucers in the Café Revive.

In the evening we went to the Stockton Divers Club at the River Tees Watersports Centre. I knew nothing about diving when I went in, thinking they kept dry in wet suits, had competitions, and learnt on holiday beaches. I now know the difference between wet and dry suits (they have wet ones for the North Sea!), that team spirit is very important and that it is best to learn to dive properly and safely here in this country before going to dive abroad. Apparently the standard of instruction in sunnier climes is often not up to the standards needed.

I was impressed with the friendly atmosphere and they way they worked together, they all seemed a happy crew. They also had excellent training. Personally I wasn't tempted to join, not wanting to get my face wet when I go swimming, but if you can get over that it sounds a great sport. Once you have bought your equipment and diving suit it must be a great incentive to keep your weight the same - the material doesn't stretch!

I was happy to present the cheque from Awards for All which will enable them to involve more women and young people, as well as buy equipment to encourage new starters. Also to present a shield for the Golden Club Award - the best club in the country. They had won this by raising £1,600 for Water Aid in a fun way. Well done and congratulations in their 25th year!
