Registering a death

Who can register a death?

1. A relative of the deceased.
2. A person present at the death.
3. If the death occurred in a Nursing Home/Hospital, and no relatives are available then the death could be registered by a senior member of staff of the establishment.
4. The person who is making the funeral arrangements (not the Funeral Director).

This is in order of priority so that we obtain the most accurate information about the deceased; unfortunately under current law executor and common-law spouse are not able to register unless they were present at the death or making the funeral arrangements.
