What is a House in Multiple Occupation?

A House in Multiple Occupation is a house or flat which is occupied by persons who do not form a single household as defined in section 345 of the Housing Act 1985, houses such as:



  • Bedsits
  • Shared Housing (this could be rooms within a property let to different people).
  • Hostels
  • Bed & Breakfasts
  • Some Guest Houses
  • Lodgings
  • Registered Homes
  • Properties which have been converted into self contained flats
