If I notice pest activity that seems to be coming from my neighbours property, what can Environmental Health do?

We would initially advise you to speak to your neighbours where possible to see if they are experiencing problems with pests and take steps to reduce activity. If this is not possible or unsuccessful, we would undertake investigation.

We would need evidence that pests are harbouring on the land or in the property. We would assess the steps that would need to be taken to effectively make the land clear of pests. We would approach the person responsible for that land where the pest infestation is, requesting that the necessary works be undertaken. If they are uncooperative, we would serve a legal Notice under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 requiring that specified works are undertaken. If the Notice is not complied with within the time period, we would undertake the works in default and recharge the person responsible.
