Nursery Education Grant

What is the Nursery Education Grant?

The Nursery Education Grant will help fund a child's part-time nursery education place at a private day nursery, pre-school playgroup or independent school.

The Nursery Education Grant can only be paid to those private day nurseries, pre-school playgroups and independent schools who are Ofsted registered and included in the Stockton-on-Tees Early Years and Childcare Development Plan.

What will Nursery Education Grant fund?

The Grant will fund a nursery education place for:

  • Up to 5 sessions a week, each session lasting 2½ hours.
  • 33 weeks of a year, usually 11 weeks per term (Autumn, Spring and Summer terms).
  • It is available from the term after your child's 3rd birthday. For example if your child were 3 years old in January, funding would be available from the summer term (ie April).
  • Children must be registered by headcount day (the third Thursday of the first month of each term).
  • The funding can continue until your child starts full time at school.
  • The Grant will not fund a place in a private day nursery, pre-school group or independent school if your child also attends a nursery class attached to primary school for 5 sessions a week.

How do I get a private Nursery place for my child?

It is likely that most children will already have a place before their 3rd birthday. However if your child hasn't got a place, contact the owner, playgroup leader or headteacher of the private day nursery, pre-school playgroup or school where you would like your child to attend.

For more information on Ofsted registered settings in the Stockton-on-Tees Early Years and Childcare Development Plan, please contact the Childcare Information Service.

Do I have to apply for funding?

You do not apply for funding. The provider informs Sure Start each term of children for whom nursery education is claimed. However the provider will ask you to:

  • Show them evidence of your child's date of birth.
  • Confirm if your child does/does not attend another setting.
If you child changes or leaves nursery during the term the Nursery Education Grant will be paid up to the date your child leaves. The grant is not transferable to the new nursery.

How are the places funded?

Sure Start will pay the Nursery Education Grant to the provider. It will be paid in two instalments each term.

The provider will, in return, provide a part-time nursery education place:

  • Free of charge
  • Reduce your fees by the cost of a nursery education place
  • You may be contacted by Sure Start Stockton-on-Tees from time to time to ask if you have received a grant for your child. This is for audit purposes and the names of parents and children are chosen at random. It would be much appreciated if you could return the form as requested.
