Can pupils go on holiday during term time?

Parents are not entitled to remove children from school for term time holidays as a right. Any leave of absence must be applied for (usually in writing). Only Head teachers have the authority to authorise term time holidays and, in considering whether to do so will take into consideration several factors, including your child's current attendance record and the time in the academic year that the holidays has been requested, eg some schools have a policy of not authorizing any holiday leave during SAT and GCSE examination times. If you decide to take your child on holiday during term time and this is not authorised by the school, the Head teacher may decide to refer to the Local Authority for a Fixed Penalty Notice fine to be issued for the absence.
