Noise Pollution

What noise problems will Environmental Health investigate?

As a general rule legislation allows us to deal with the noise that is coming from premises including domestic, industrial and commercial.

Noise in the street is more difficult to deal with and as we only have powers to deal with noise from vehicles, machinery or equipment. Therefore we cannot deal with children playing, shouting and screaming and anti social behaviour in general.

We will investigate the following:-

  • Domestic noise such as loud music.
  • Commercial noise such as machinery noise.
  • Barking dogs
  • Intruder alarms sounding for more than 20 minutes or going off on a regular basis
  • Construction noise.
  • Noise in streets - use of loud speakers in the street.

Guidance leaflets on noise are available from this office.
