Contaminated Land

What is contaminated land?

Substances on or under land from a previous industrial activity can cause the land to be designated as contaminated land

However before any land can be declared contaminated it must be demonstrated that the pollutants are causing 'significant harm ' to humans [and certain other receptors] or pollution of water resources. This is a complex process and Government's Statutory Guidance must be followed.

How is the Council dealing with contaminate land?

The Council is responsible for enforcing for dealing with contaminated land and has produced a published a Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy [see below] which sets out a program of how we are going to deal with this issue. The Environment Agency is responsible for dealing with certain badly contaminated sites known as special sites.

What information does the Council have on potentially contaminated land?

The Council has a large amount of digital information on historic land use for the whole of the Borough dating back to 1850.

We also have information on existing and closed waste disposal sites within the Borough.

Is there a register of contaminated land?

The Council is required to keep a register of any site which have been declared to be contaminated land, the register will contain details of any remediation notices and remediation statements.
