What do I do if I find a dog?

Firstly you must report the fact that you have found a stray dog to ourselves on the below telephone numbers; it is an offence not to!

If you have the dog secure, during normal office hours, please telephone (01642) 526575. We will arrange for an animal welfare officer to collect the dog normally that same day; this will depend on officer availability and the time of day. If this is not possible the dog can be collected first thing the following morning. Alternatively the dog can be brought to our offices in 16 Church Road, Stockton on Tees between 9am and 5pm

Outside of normal office hours and at weekends there will be no collection service. A stray dog can reported lost or brought, via prior notification, by calling (01642) 618946 to the Council's stray dog reception point at the Security and Surveillance Centre, The Square, Stockton (opposite Stockton Baptist Tabernacle).

If you feel that you would like to keep the dog you must still notify us that you have the dog and we will issue you with a finders certificate. This will enable you to keep the dog unless the owner reclaims it, in which case you have no legal ownership rights on the dog. You can however claim all reasonable costs incurred whilst caring for the dog for the owner.
