Do I need approval to renew existing windows?

Yes.

Since 1 April 2002 all work to replace existing windows is required to comply with the regulations and therefore an application must be made to the Council, unless the work is carried out by a FENSA registered installer.

If you do decide to use a FENSA registered installer, you can find a list of installers on the Glass and Glazing Federation web site a link to which can be found in the External Links section of this page. If you choose this route you do not need to make an application to us, your FENSA installer is responsible for achieving compliance with the regulations.

If you decide to use another installer or do the work yourself, a Building Notice must be submitted to us and should include a description of the number and size of the windows to be installed. The fee charged is determined by the estimated cost of carrying out the work.

You can establish what the fee will be by using our Fee Calculator in the Downloads section below.
