Which air pollutants are measured and how do they affect your health? |
|
We continuously measure the main air pollutants at two sites within the Borough using sophisticated monitoring equipment
These include the following :-
- Oxides of Nitrogen
- Sulphur Dioxide
- Small Particles [known as PM10s]
- Carbon Monoxide
- Ozone
The readings for each pollutant are then classified into one of four pollution bands and is further classified according to the air pollution index [on a 1-10 scale]as shown below: -
Air Quality Band Air Quality IndexHealth Effects
Low 1-3 Effects are unlikely to be noticed even by those who are sensitive to air pollution.
Moderate 4-6 Sensitive people may notice mild effects but these are unlikely to need action.
High 7-9 Sensitive people may notice significant effects and may need to take action.
Very High 10 Effects on sensitive people, described for HIGH pollution, may worsen.
