What roads do the Council grit?

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, as Highway Authority, is responsible for all adopted roads within the Borough with the exception of the A19 and the A66 Trunk Roads which are maintained by Autolink and A-one on behalf of the Highways Agency.

It is impractical to treat every road in the Borough and the policy of the Council reflects this fact. The policy is to ensure that main routes are kept clear in order that free passage of transport is maintained and there is minimum disruption to people travelling to and from home and work. Treatment is therefore determined on a network priority and resources will be concentrated on keeping the more important routes open.

Priority routes include all major roads, important bus routes and roads leading to industrial estates and outlying communities.

Once the decision to salt the roads has been taken our fleet of gritters are deployed and there are currently five gritting routes across the length and breadth of the borough ensuring full coverage of the Priority network. The standby teams can be called out at any time and can be on the road within an hour.

There are cross boundary arrangements in place with neighbouring authorities whereby, for the sake of operational efficiency, they undertake to salt certain stretches of road within Stockton Borough (invariably at the boundary edges). This reciprocal agreement means that we, in turn, salt certain lengths of road in neighbouring authorities. These agreements are confirmed at the outset of every winter to avoid confusion and possible gaps in network coverage. This will explain why you may spot a Hartlepool Borough Council gritter on the A178 Seaton Carew Road or a Stockton Borough Council gritter in Sadberge.

A detailed plan of the current Priority gritting routes within Stockton Borough is contained in the "Winter Services in Stockton" leaflet available on request from Care For Your Area.
