Can I have a salt bin in my street?

Salt bins will only be provided in certain locations and only where roads are not treated as part of the Priority network. The site must qualify under at least one of the following criteria:-

  • exposed location
  • steep gradient
  • difficult bend
  • potentially dangerous road junction

There are currently 208 salt bins sited around the Borough for the use of the public on a self-help basis. Any empty or vandalised bins should be reported to Care For Your Area for refilling or repair.

Salt bins are normally placed on site in October/November and removed in April/May after the end of winter.

It should be noted that the Council is not responsible for roads that have yet to be adopted on new housing developments. If residents feel a particular location is dangerous then they should request the estate developer to provide a salt bin.

If you believe your road qualifies for a salt bin then contact Care For Your Area and the winter services duty officer will deal with the request.
