6. What if I am unable to get to the Polling Station on Election Day?

If you are unable to go to your Polling Station on Election Day, you can apply to vote by post or proxy (a proxy is someone who votes on your behalf). You may vote by post for any reason for a specific election, for a particular period or indefinitely. For that period that you chose to vote by post, you will not be allowed to vote at your polling station. There is a deadline for applications so they can be processed prior to an election.

If you require any further information please contact the Electoral Registration Office or you can download the Vote by Post Application form using the link in the "Online Services" below and post it to the Electoral Registration.

Proxy

Your application does not have to be supported:

If you are registered blind or you are in receipt of the higher rate of mobility allowance.

If you are applying for a specific election due to temporary illness, work commitments, away on holiday or have not had time to re-register.

Your application does have to be supported:

If you have a long term illness or disability which makes it difficult for you to vote in person. (Your application must be supported by a registered medical practioner, a registered nurse or Christian science practioner. If you are in a residential home or sheltered housing, the matron or warden may support your application).

If your job, or that of your spouse, may take you away from home for long periods at a time. (Your application must be supported by your employer or your spouse's employer. If you are self-employed, then the support must be 18 or over, know you and not related to you).
