Open Technology and UK Online Centre

Stockton's Open Technology & UK Online Centre, the first of its kind in the region, has opened the way to a whole new world of computer technology for local people.

In 1997/8 only 33 local authorities, from 100 applications in England were successful in achieving 50% funding for the new initiative from the Central Government Department of Culture, Media and Sport / Wolfson Foundation. Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council has provided the remaining 50% to equip the Centre.

The Centre was officially launched by The Worshipful the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Barry Woodhouse on the 4th April 1998 as an Open Technology Centre. In the first three months of opening the centre celebrated it's 5000th visitor. The Centre has also been recognised by the government as part of the 'I.T. for All' partnership; in 2001 became a UK Online Centre and in 2002 a European Public Information Centre.
