Billingham Forum Leisure Centre |
|
Official Opening 19th October, 1967 was the date of the grand opening by Her Majesty the Queen, escorted by her husband Prince Phillip.
The Forum had, however, been open since 17th July, 1967 and has remained an integral part of Billingham life ever since.
Over 250,000 visitors had passed through the doors by the time the Queen herself visited the Forum, with weekly visitor attendances at 25,000.
Changes Over the Years Now over 30 years later, the Forum still attracts large numbers, up to 20,000 per week, both local and from further afield. Changes have taken place to accommodate changing demands: The creche has been replaced with a bouncy castle and soft play area. The missile range has been replaced by a fitness suite and workout area. An activity room has been created to cater for the huge demand in personal fitness, aerobics, bums and turns, circuit training etc., drama groups and martial arts.
Some Things Never Change Due to the popularity of some facilities, change is unnecessary: The sports hall is still as popular today for football, badminton and other indoor games as ever. Indoor bowling remains ever popular with several league and cup competitions. The swimming and teaching pools continue to provide a comprehensive programme from parent and toddler classes, learn to swim (children and adult) courses, through to competitive swimming, subaqua diving and life saving clubs. The Ice Arena is home to the Billingham Bombers Ice Hockey Club and its comprehensive youth policy, also Billingham Ice Skating Club coaching beginners to national champions. Squash and table tennis are also still available.
Another aspect that has changed little over the years is the Forums comprehensive teaching and coaching programme including swimming, ice skating, gymnastics, trampolining, drama, fun dance/ballet, judo, Aikido, Multigym, aerobics, step aerobics, bums and Turns, circuit training, football, stick and glove (ice hockey), over 50 keep fit and aquafit.
