Wynyard Woodland Park (formerly the Castle Eden Walkway)

The Borough of Stockton falls within much of the wider Tees Forest and is a key provider of countryside sites. These include large recreational areas like the Country Parks and smaller Local Nature Reserves.

Wynyard Woodland Park (formerly known as the Castle Eden Walkway) started life as a working railway carrying freight to the ports along the River Tees. Now it provides visitors with miles of flat footpaths and numerous circular walks. Housed in the old railway station, the Visitor Centre has displays about archaeology, woodland history and wildlife.

Visitors can try their hand at weaving or woodturning and can participate in ancient country crafts and skills at one of the many events held throughout the year.  The Observatory has become popular with visitors interested in astronomy and a 70 seat planetarium opened in Spring 2002.  The new facility is available to schools, groups and visitors throughout the year. Here the universe can be explored even on cloudy days, with the site linked to the large telescope in the Observatory.
