School Travel Plans are a response to the Government's "Travelling to School, An Action Plan" paper.
It is recognised that too many children are being habitually driven to school. This causes congestion, resulting in increased local pollution, contributing to climate change, as well as reducing children's opportunities to exercise, socialise with their peers, and develop the skills needed to travel safely and independently.
A School Travel Plan explores these issues and others and encourages everybody who attends and travels to and from the school to re-examine how they access the school.
A travel plan can provide a route map to a more sustainable journey to school, and links with the Governments Healthy Schools, and Extended Schools initiatives.
Authorised Travel Plans can receive Government funding of up to £10,000 to be used to pay for measures to improve sustainable school travel such as: cycle storage, pedestrian shelters, and access improvements. Many of Stockton's schools have already benefited from this funding.
