Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles have an important role in the local transport network - only buses carry more passengers locally. Because they fill the 'gaps' in bus service provision at certain times of the day and in the outlying areas of the Borough, they provide residents with access to many services. The Council licenses both taxis and Private Hire Vehicles, and the
Trading Standards and Licensing Website includes useful information.
The Council works closely with the taxi and licensed hire trade through the
Stockton-on-Tees Taxi Quality Partnership. Initiatives being developed by the Partnership include the introduction of CCTV cameras in taxis and driver shields. These innovative schemes are helping to address concerns about personal safety expressed by both drivers and passengers.
The council will also be working with the trade to improve standards and make taxis easier to use by elderly residents and people with disabilities.
Designated taxi ranks are provided at key locations throughout the borough, see details below.
