Bus Pass Information - Older Person's
The age that you qualify to apply for an older person's concessionary bus pass changed on 6 April 2010. Find out more about changes to the older person's bus pass scheme.
If you have reached pension age and you are travelling anywhere within the Tees Valley (Stockton, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Hartlepool and Redcar & Cleveland) you can travel free of charge between 9.30am and 11.00pm on weekdays and at any time on weekends. using your older person's bus pass.
From 1st April 2011 holders of the national bus pass under the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) will need to pay a fixed fare of 30 pence for any journey starting before 9.30am Mondays to Fridays.
This fare will apply to all scheduled services operating within, from or between the areas covered by Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Councils. Travel at any other time remains free of charge.
The 30 pence concessionary fare applies only to pass holders whose English National Concessionary Travel Scheme pass was issued by Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Councils.
Travellers who hold passes issued by other authorities will need to pay full fare if they wish to travel before 9.30am or after 11.00pm Mondays to Fridays.
If you wish to travel further afield you will need to contact the local council in the area that you wish to travel, to find out if they state travel time restrictions. This concessionary bus pass does not cover travel on National Express or other private coach services nor does it apply to rail services.
To register for a bus pass you will need to call into one of our offices (details and opening times listed at the end of this page) - with the following information:
- A document that shows that you live within the Stockton Borough (utility bill, driving licence).
- A document that shows your date of birth (birth certificate, passport, driving licence).
The older persons concessionary bus pass is free of charge. We will take a photograph of you when you call into the office with the information that we require - we do not charge for the photograph.
Lost/stolen Bus Pass
Please note that replacements are available for lost or stolen passes. These cost £5.00 each for the first loss, then the replacement cost will rise to £10.00 each for further losses.
To pay for replacement Bus Pass
You can pay for a Bus Pass using any of the following:
- Cash
- Cheque - made payable to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council
- Postal Order - made payable to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council
- Credit or Debit Card (for payments of £10 and over only)
We can accept your bus pass registration up to 13 days before the date you become eligible so that you have the pass ready to travel for free on the same day that you qualify.
