Arguably the most efficient means of transport known to man, within the right environment cycling is an enjoyable and direct mode of transport. Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is committed to promoting cycling both as a sustainable mode of transport and as a healthy leisure activity.
Since the publication of the Council's first Cycling Strategy in July 1998, considerable improvements have been made to the Borough's cycle network. These include:-
- Completion of National Cycle Network routes linking Billingham and Stockton to the Tees Barrage and beyond to Middlesbrough
- Construction of the Ingleby Barwick to Thornaby Cycleway
- Introduction of a direct cycleway link between Ingleby Barwick and Preston Farm Industrial Estate as part of the
South Stockton Link scheme - Implementation of local sections of new route on Darlington Back Lane in Stockton, Marsh House Avenue in
Billingham and along the south bank of the River Tees between the Tees Barrage and Newport Bridge
Developed in partnership with Sustrans, the revised Cycling Strategy aims to build upon achievements made to date by setting out a programme aimed at increasing levels of cycling through a wide range of initiatives developed by the
Council and numerous public, private and voluntary sector organisations. As well as complementing and reinforcing the Stockton-on-Tees Local Transport Plan, the Strategy is also consistent with policies within the Council's Community Plan, Local Development Plan and Local Agenda 21 Strategy.
