Cultural Quarter Improvements

Green Dragon Yard artist impression from above

The second phase of streetscape improvements is underway at the Cultural Quarter in central Stockton. The streetscape improvements to Green Dragon Yard and surrounding areas are part of a phased strategy that has already seen public realm improvements to Calvert's Lane.

The Cultural Quarter is made up of a series of small yards, including Wasp's Nest Yard and Theatre Yard, linked by alleyways that open up into the Green Dragon Yard, a small centrally located square.

The improvement works include the replacement of some of the existing cobbles with a modern alternative granite material whilst still reflecting the character of the yard.

A central feature area is proposed which will be surrounded by pleached (cubed) trees to provide a central contemplation space, allowing the top and bottom sections of the yard to be utilised as potential entertainment areas.

Improvements will also be made at each of the alleyways connecting into the Cultural Quarter integrating new surface materials and a feature lighting scheme to invite users into the yards.

The works in the courtyard are expected to be completed in the Autumn with a small pause mid-summer for the Stockton International Riverside Festival.
