What is 'Urban Design'?

Urban design is the overarching approach to place making. It is the bringing together of various disciplines to provide a functional, attractive & sustainable environment that includes buildings and the spaces that surround them.

It is crucial to the process of planning, promoting conservation, sustainable regeneration & place making and can be done through the successful implementation of good building, highway and landscape design.

Good design can help provide successful places to live, work, and play that are vibrant, safe, accessible, and have distinctive character and identity.

Objectives of the Urban Design Team

  • To provide co-ordinated design and technical advice on Urban Design, Highways, Transportation, Landscape Architecture, and Project Management.
  • To promote, develop, enhance and conserve the environment of Stockton-on-Tees through planning policy development, design guidance, frameworks & strategic initiatives.
