Extended Schools

These pages have been developed to provide information to schools and partners about extended schools / services. The Extended Schools team will be maintaining this site throughout the process and encourage you to review it on a regular basis.

What is it?

The Government launched the extended schools prospectus, Access to Services and Opportunities for All, in June 2005. The propsectus sets out their vision for extended services and how these could be developed. A prospectus entitled "Extended schools - Building on experience" recently published updates the vision.

The Government has set out a 'core offer' of services that they want all children and families to be able to access by 2010.

Extended Schools/Services are part of a national programme of reform to provide more opportunities and better support to children. There are five areas which chidren and young people have said are important to their wellbeing:

  • to be healthy;
  • to be safe;
  • to enjoy and achieve;
  • to make a positive contribution;
  • to achieve economic wellbeing.

Extended schools will help to achieve some of these aims by providing a range of services and activities which will often be beyond the school day. the services and activities will help meet the needs of children and young people and also their familes and the wider community.

Many of Stockton's schools are already offering a wide range of activities and we want to ensure that all children and familes have access to the core offer
