Redhill Education Service

The Redhill Education Service provides education and support for children and young people who are unable to attend school for medical reasons, also for those suffering from acute anxiety and school phobia.

Provision is also made for pregnant school girls and young mothers.

In accordance with the Schools and Families Act 2010, local authorities must ensure that all children who fall into the scope of section 19 of the 1996 Act receive full-time education unless reasons relating to their medical condition mean that this would not be in their best interests.

Advice and support can be given to schools and other agencies in the form of strategies and resources to address the needs of pupils.

Support is given to pupils in the form of direct teaching and a one-to-one or small group basis as appropriate. Teaching styles used take account of pupils' individual needs.

We aim to adopt a holistic approach to the family as we would be unable to provide education without first addressing the medical, emotional and social needs of the young person. The service is focused on all stages of a pupil's needs - from their referral through to full re-integration to school where appropriate.

Advice and support available

For schools and young people (across the key stages) working with Redhill Education service the following support may be provided:

  • assessing and evaluating a pupil's needs (each case is tailored to the individual and the number of tuition hours each week will be negotiated and reviewed throughout)
  • working in partnership with pupils, parents/carers and schools to achieve successful re-integration into school when the young person's health permits (this may include transport and classroom support if needed)
  • general and specific advice and support
  • arrange reviews, transition plans, progress reports and multi-agency meetings
  • recognise the individual needs of the pupil and adapt the National Curriculum to provide a personalised learning programme
  • collection of work from school and return once its completed

Redhill Education Centre provides controlled exam conditions for pupils but does not operate as an exam centre.

Referrals

Referrals are assessed on the basis of pupils' individual needs.

When a child is ill, the school's designated teacher will liaise with the parents of the pupil to provide work for the first 15 working days to ensure educational continuity.

Referral routes for the service depend upon the needs of the pupil. Referrals on the basis of medical grounds can be made by a parent/carer or professional but it must be supported by a letter from the child's consultant.

Pregnant school girls can be referred via their school or the Teenage Pregnancy Support service. They may transfer to Redhill from the 20th week of their pregnancy. Requests for earlier transfers would need to be supported by medical evidence. In exceptional circumstances, some young mothers may continue to be educated by Redhill Education service after the birth of their baby. Nursery provision is available.

Anxious pupils and those with mental health needs are referred via a moderating panel and referrals must be supported by an appropriate medical professional.
