Graduate Teacher Programme - Entry Requirements
You must already possess the necessary qualifications listed below before applying for the programme. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 30th November 2011. If you are studying at this stage you cannot apply for a position on the programme.
Anyone who wants to teach in a state-maintained school in England or Wales needs to gain Qualified Teacher Status. To achieve this award, you need to complete a period of Initial Teacher Training (ITT), which will enable you to meet the professional standards for Qualified Teacher status. We only award Qualified Teacher status to trainees who have completed one full academic year on the programme. Please be aware that we Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council does not fund Qualified Teacher Status Assessment only or Training for Overseas Trained Teachers.

Secondary school teaching applicants the type and subject of the degree is very important. The subject content ought to be at least 50% of the subject in which you are to teach.
Primary school teaching applicants a relevant degree is preferred in that it would support the trainee and the school in providing a high quality curriculum.
Experience of working with children or young people is essential and it would be desirable if you had experience of teaching or training in the area relevant to your chosen subject/phase.
We recommend that all applicants who do currently have experience of working with children and young people undertake at least five days of school experience. The aim of this experience is to confirm your decision, gain understanding of educational practice, to inform the interview and selection process and also to support your future learning.
Once you have organised a voluntary school placement you should arrange with the Headteacher to spend some time in classes of the appropriate age range. While you are in school, you should observe teaching and learning within your subject or phase. It would be beneficial to have a discussion with the Head of Department or Key Stage Leader.
