Graduate Teacher programme - Subject knowledge enhancement courses

Subject knowledge enhancement courses help you gain the depth of knowledge you'll need to train to teach your chosen subject.  These courses are aimed at those who have already been offered a place on the Graduate Teacher programme subject to completion of a subject knowledge enhancement course.

The courses will help you identify your individual training needs and top up your subject knowledge in areas that would be difficult to address on your own, such as certain practical elements of design and technology.

There are currently courses available for the following secondary-phase subjects:

  • chemistry
  • design and technology
  • information and communication technology (ICT)
  • mathematics
  • modern languages
  • physics
  • music

How long do the courses take?

Most subject knowledge enhancement courses comprise the equivalent of two weeks' study, but courses may be longer. Depending on the individual course, you can take this all in one go as a full-time course, or spread over a longer period part-time.

Where and when are the courses available?

Subject knowledge enhancement courses are available all over England. Details of when they are available are included in each course's details.

Applying for subject  knowledge enhancement courses

If you think you need to go on a subject knowledge enhancement course, you should first apply to the Graduate Teacher programme. If the course provider considers you to have the attributes to make a good teacher, you will be offered a conditional GTP place and referred to the subject knowledge enhancement course provider in your region. It is also a good idea to contact the subject knowledge enhancement course provider in your region directly.

After your subject knowledge enhancement course

Upon your successful completion of the course, and dependent on whether you meet the providers criteria, you will be offered a place on the Graduate Teacher programme leading to Qualified Teacher status.
