Procedures for Home Education
Should parents decide to home educate the following procedure should be followed:
Parents of children on roll in Stockton on Tees schools and wanting to home educate should write to the Head Teacher of the school informing them of the intention to home educate and requesting the child's name is removed from roll from the date of the letter.
In cases where children attend a special school a request should first be made to the Local Authority SEN Manager for consent to de register the child.
The Head Teacher will remove the child's name from the admission register within 10 school days and will inform the Local Authority of the parents' decision by referring to the Attendance Service.
Following receipt of the referral the Attendance Service will make arrangements to visit the parent and child at home or an alternative venue if preferred. The Attendance Service will carry out an assessment and offer advice on parents' rights and responsibilities in relation to home education.
If a child has never attended a school parents are not obliged to inform the Local Authority, although it would be appreciated if this was done.
Parents can reconsider the decision to home educate at any time and the Local Authority will be happy to give advice and assistance regarding a pupil's re-admission to school.
