Elective home education
By law it is parents' responsibility to ensure their child receives an education either by attending school or otherwise. For the majority of children this means attending school however some parents elect to home educate their child for a variety of reasons. In making this decision parents should be aware of the legal requirements they must adhere to.
In taking the decision to home educate parents may wish to consider:
- The reasons why they are choosing to home educate. Support and assistance is available at school and from the Local Authority Attendance Service should children be experiencing problems at school. Parents should not see home education as a solution to school attendance problems.
- The time and energy needed to ensure children receive a full and efficient education.
- The child's view, taking into consideration the child's age and maturity.
- The financial cost involved, for example resources needed, access to technology, books etc.
- Access to formal qualifications. Parents will need to enter children for examinations themselves and meet the cost involved.
- They ensure socialization opportunities in the community and with other children of the same age.
