Stockton recognises the need for its schools to complete effective self-evaluation as part of its school improvement processes. A New Relationship with Schools: Improving Performance through school self-evaluation (DfES 2005) identifies four key points about self-evaluation that are important to schools:
- rigorous self-evaluation helps schools to improve; it should not be undertaken solely for the purpose of inspection
- schools should shape for themselves a process that is simple and integrated with their routine management systems
- schools must listen to and do something about the views of their stakeholders
- the school's recorded summary of its self-evaluation process (Ofsted's self-evaluation form) should be up-dated at least annually and include information about the impact of its action on learners.
Stockton LA is committed to supporting its schools with effective school self-evaluation through a wide range of approaches. The LA provides professional development in school self-evaluation practice through the LA brokerage service. The school's self-evaluation form (SEF) is a key evidence source for the LA annual performance review of schools and Secondary School Improvement Partner (SIP) visits. Working in partnership with schools the LA has developed school self-evaluation resources and practice.
