The Graduate Teacher Programme is an employment based route into teaching. GTP trainees are employed by the school and their training is individualised to their specific needs. GTP has exactly the same entry requirements and standards as other initial teacher training routes.
Applications and Further Information
How to apply?
Check to see if you have the right entry qualifications - you must have gained the following qualification before you start training:
- Degree or equivalent (360 CAT points)
- 2.2 honours degree minimum (If your qualifications are other than a UK degree you will need evidence that the degree is equivalent)
- GCSE at A* - C in English and Mathematics
- GCSE Science (C or above if you wish to teach primary)
- See the TDA website www.tda.gov.uk/Recruit.aspx for acceptable equivalent qualifications.
For secondary applicants the type and subject of the degree is very important. The subject content ought to be at least 50% of the subject in which you are to teach.
For primary applicants a relevant degree would be preferential in that it would support the trainee and the school in providing a high quality curriculum.
Experience of working with children or young people is essential and it would be desirable if you had experience of teaching or training in the area relevant to your chosen subject / phase. (See Frequently Asked Questions for further details).

You Do Not Have To Find A School
In order to apply you need to:
- download the application form;
- complete and sign the form;
- return the form, CV and letter of application (explain in the letter the reason for applying and wanting to be a teacher);
- the deadline for applications is posted on the website. Applications are accepted from 1st June in the previous year to starting. The deadline for applying is the last working day in November prior to starting;
- the Partnership Representatives / Subject & Phase Specialists from the schools involved short list candidates. In January those successful in the initial selection stages will be invited to attend the stage 3 selection process. At the stage 3 selection event there will be a qualificiations check where all original certifications must be available together with photocopies of the original certificates, which will be kept with the application form for future reference. During this selection procedure candidates will undertake written, IT and verbal interactive tests;
- candidates who are successful at the stage 3 process will have their application forms, selection 3 work and certificates made available to the schools who are involved in the Stockton-on-Tees Partnership. The schools will then arrange to interview candidates and appoint during February / March;
- the training programme will normally last for one school year, starting each September.
CRB Check
This is required for anyone working in our schools. For graduate trainees, the requirement is for an 'enhanced' check. The Partnership will take responsibility for ensuring the CRB checks are carried out for all successful candidates.
